King Waxworth XVIII is a luminarch from the planet Allumeur, and also its monarch.

As a direct descendant of Wick the Unfading, the first luminarch, Waxworth is the incumbent Keeper of the Sacred Flame, which tradition says is the mythical Last Light of Galaxy. Since it was first recovered from the Burning Fields of Allumeur, and nurtured back to life by Wick the Unfading, this holy artefact has been passed down the line of succession from one luminarch to another. Though luminarchs are not a spellcasting species, by being imbued with Galaxy’s light, Waxworth wields great magical power.

Though Waxworth has always been a fair and benevolent king, enthusiasm for the monarchy is fading. The reign of his father, Vigil XXXI, was a tumultuous one, fraught with political scandals and lusty affairs, and the rise of Blackhole worship across Allumeur and the wider galaxy has done him no favours, either, leaving Waxworth to fan the flames of a fast-spreading republican movement, lest he lose his crown… maybe even his head!

He resides in the Palace of Eternal Fire with his wife, Queen Candella, and their children, Litandle and Glowrielle.

As king, Waxworth’s ambition is to restore faith in the monarchy, drive out the Order of the Event Horizon and their schemes, and restore peace and prosperity to the planet of Allumeur. He hopes to do this by moulding his son and heir, Prince Litandle, into the sort of strong and dignified character befitting the honour and duty of royal office.

Personality

He loathes being handed anything to read, leading to rumours around the Palace of Eternal Fire that he cannot read – which he angrily denies, of course, saying that it’s because he’s busy, and has time only to be given summaries. He dislikes literature as a rule, especially poetry, though he does like song, and regularly has his minstrels sing to him about his ancestors’ heroic deeds over musical arrangements. He signs all documents handed to him with a large, loopy signature and hands them straight back, unread.

Privately, Waxworth has a particularly tense relationship with his wife and sister Queen Candella. Despite literally being born to be wed, as per luminarch tradition, the pair have nothing in common. Instead, Waxworth prefers the company of his many mistresses.
